Many pet owners have been wondering can my pet such as dogs and cats catch the H1N1 virus (swine flu) ? The answer is yes! There are reports from people where their household pets were showing signs and symptoms of the H1N1 flu virus. Pet owners originally had the flu and it was then passed onto their pets such as dogs, cats and even ferrets. Most people didn’t even realize that their pets could be infected with the swine flu virus but now we all know.

So what do pet owners do when their dogs and cats catch the H1N1 virus? What you should do is take your pet to your local veterinarian and seek treatment. That is your best choice to seek medical attention for your pet.

If you think about it, pets catching the H1N1 may sound weird to some but not really. The H1N1 virus originated from pigs, animals, and then it was passed onto humans. Now it is being passed on from humans to your pets at home. Think about it if we catch the H1N1 swine flu and we pet our dogs or cats and they lick our hands, it makes perfect sense how it is transmitted to them. I have to admit when I first heard of pets getting the H1N1 virus it sounded weird to me but after thinking about it, it’s not at all. This swine flu pandemic is affecting everyone even pets now. Pretty soon we’ll be having long line ups at veterinarian clinics so their pet can get the H1N1 flu shot. Is there even one for pets that they can get?

For all you pet owners out there make sure you wash your hands regularly to try and prevent the spread of H1N1 not only in the public but to your pets as well. Another key point to remember is to watch your pets for any signs or symptoms of the H1N1 flu virus. Lots of people have pets so I wonder how fast it will spread among them as well. This H1N1 pandemic is really affecting many people and I now its infecting our pets too. Crazy!
